Freedom Lessons : Learn to Live Free

For Liberty!---and occasional levity Freedom Lessons is a meeting place to learn from and equip one another as we persuade others to embrace individual freedom. The goal? A lasting cultural preference for freedom, limited government, free markets, respect for the Constitution and rule of law, and a more sensible and strong national defense.  That's all.

The task we take very seriously.  Ourselves, well, not so much...

“Things have come to a hell of a pass
When a man can’t wallop his own jackass.”

Think of the last time you ever bought a pairs of shoes.  Tires.  Gallon of milk.  Think of any consumable item.  What did you have in mind before you selected your shoes, tires, or milk?  You most likely were thinking along these lines:

Are the shoes the rights size, right style, right for what I need in a pair of shoes?  Are the tires the right size, have proper treads, and are reputably safe?  Is the milk out of date and will cause me intestinal cramping?

In other words, you had some basic criteria against which you judged these items before you approved and then purchased them.  We all index items within categories of value, then act along the results of how well things “measure up” to expectations.  We judge items we purchase according to their merit.

What would a Freedom Index look like?  Against what or whom would it apply?

Let’s fist look at what and against whom it should apply:

  • Politicians asking for our support.  That is, asking to hold power over our lives and liberties
  • Laws of the federal and state legislatures
  • Acts of the president and governors
  • All acts of local governments
  • Anything the talking heads and media dish up for our consumption
Now to the Freedom Index.  Let’s give it three points  (Think again about your gallon of milk.)  With any act of government and anything coming from the media, weigh what you see and hear against this criteria:
1) Limited or Unlimited Government?
Does this action expand government control in society and my life, or does it enhance individual freedom?
2)  More or Less Opportunity?
Will this action allow more opportunity by promoting freedom, or will it limit opportunity by imposing more debt, taxes, inflation, and state control of society?
3) More or Less Taxes? Will this action increase the tax burden and therefore limit opportunity, or will it enhance economic freedom for everyone?
4) More on The Cart or More Pulling the Cart?
Will this action create more government dependency or less?  Will it result in fewer taxpayers bearing the tax burden?
You would not buy sour milk.  Do your homework and don’t buy government actions and media bilge that sour freedom.  Remind yourself and them that freedom has no expiration date.
